Multimedia iPod Vehicle Docking Test Unit

Vehicle manufacturers are now installing the latest in multimedia systems within their cars. One of the most common media players is the Apple iPod.

To verify the installation of a docking system, the vehicle manufacturer needs to confirm that all of the connections between the multimedia system and the docking connector are made. This is often carried out using a Apple iPod, however these are very "attractive" items and a high number of units either disappear or develop "imaginary" faults leading to the need to be replaced regularly.

Sorion has, at the request of vehicle manufacturers, developed a unit that connects with the vehicle docking system and verifies that link. The Docking test unit pictured above checks that power is available from the audio system, the remote control signals from the audio system are present, LEDs provide connection / status information and it sends simple tones through the docking system to verify the audio channels.

The docking test connector is shaped to allow connection to both Classic and Nano sized docking stations as well as flying lead connection.

The iPod Docking Test Unit which is housed in a rugged machined aluminium enclosure is intended exclusively for testing the installation of an Apple iPod docking system within vehicles as they are being assembled on the production line.

The docking test unit is also designed to be maintainable. The connector can be easily replaced as this is the part that will wear with use and the software within the embedded controller can be re-flashed to provide flexibility and future proofing.

However it should be noted that the iPod Docking Test Unit is NOT an Apple iPod copy and DOES NOT contain any means of storing media files and replaying them. The iPod Docking Test Unit is NOT an accessory of an Apple iPod and can’t be used with one.
